Acheron District and Hall

Acheron is a well kept secret - a small hamlet situated on the Maroondah Highway between Taggerty and Alexandra at the confluence of the Acheron and the Goulburn rivers, about 2 hours from Melbourne CBD – if you blink you might miss it. The countryside is very beautiful with a combination of lush river flats and grassy, tree dotted, rolling hills – lots of Angus cattle, and with views of the Cathedral range.

Living in the area is a mixture of farming families, tree changers, retirees and weekenders. For visitors, Acheron has Twin Rivers caravan park which is nestled on the bank of the Goulburn River where it joins the Acheron, and is a Mecca for trout fishermen; Rennie’s Restaurant and Art Gallery; The Acheron CFA which was very active during the Black Saturday fires; and next door to that, the jewel in the crown – our Acheron Hall, owned and maintained by the local community. The hall was built in 1914 on donated land, originally as a Mechanics' Institute, by the locals for the locals. It sits in a quiet country lane amidst majestic gum trees, near the Acheron River, and has a wonderful ambience which is partly due to its modest size, and to its natural timber lined walls and ceiling and polished timber floors. The hall is well maintained by our active Acheron Hall Committee, which also organises functions during the year for the local residents and friends to get together and enjoy each other's company. Acheron Hall is available for hire to responsible adults at reasonable rates – see Hall Hire for contact details. The Acheron Hall has enough tables, chairs, crockery and cutlery to comfortably cater for 80 guests; is air conditioned and heated; has a kitchen to suit caterers; an enclosed vestibule; a small stage with a pianola; a toilet block; an exterior rear garden with child proof fencing and shaded deck with barbeque facilities. It’s used for many different functions such as – parties, weddings, meetings, church services, yoga and musical soirees.
